Today I returned to some truly serious editing of the screenplay, mostly inspired and empowered by watching Gosling in DRIVE.
Thinking endless about his supremely effective “less is more” approach with that character, I finally took the proverbial gloves off and started cutting Voice-Over sections left, right, and center.
Like with truant children, I’ve set up some tough-love rules.
Interior Monologues have no place within my scenes (but they work fine for transitions.)
And the most basic maxim of writing –– SHOW don’t TELL –– must be maintained at all costs.
Let’s face it: We all knew this day would come.
And now I actually have faith that the lead actor’s going to just DELIVER everything I need with less and less dialogue.
And while there are still a bucketful of lines of I’m having a hard time losing, at least I know they live safely inside the novel’s pages.
