When I stopped teaching at the Laughing Lotus, I suggested they retire the slot I’d had for 9+ years –– Saturday @ 5pm –– as a gesture towards Retiring the Jersey.
And today, I decided that it was time to eliminate from my wardrobe a key and vital element: an Angès B pullover I’ve had since … maybe 1995 (wow!)
I remember the person who gave me this top –– we were in a relationship form 1993 until 1997 –– and I remember instantly loving the color (a medium blue periwinkle) and the fit and the style.
I remember sometime in 2004 wearing it in a cab with Club Kid legends Amanda Lepore and Richie Rich (look them up if you’re unfamiliar) with a little black ski cap and Richie remarking I looked like a French cat burglar (which I took as one of my favorite compliments.)
I wore this pullover in in 2006 for my appearance on the Travel Channel re: fantasy hotel penthouses (the clip is under my press page if you’d like to see it in action).
And I’ve worn it countless times ever since.
Today I set up a Facetime video call with a Task Rabbit I hired to go to my San Francisco storage space to comb through some wardrobe choices –– I returned to NYC to shoot the video for 1 week, ended up staying 6 week, and I’m now in Florida for 3 months, and probably NYC for 2 afterwards –– to fill out my limited clothing choices.
And I realized that this marvelous top was simply too far gone, too unraveled, too sad-looking to continue as a wardrobe staple.
I’m not sure what I should do –– throwing it in the trash seems too callous and yet a burial at sea too over-the-top .. but all I know is … you will be remember fondly and forever, Angès B pullover … far beyond these last 17-ish years you and I have had so many casually elegant adventures together.
Thank you.
And Good Night (old friend).
