Astonishingly lovely lunch today with my visiting friend from LA, the magical and gorgeous Karen Lorre at Bouley.
It’s such a sensual ritual from the moment you walk in and smell the room lined with thousands of apples through the multiple amuse-bouches right through the gifted chocolate truffles at the end.
Artistic and visionary, everything is PERFECTION.
And yet … on exiting they only gave a complimentary loaf of lemon tea cake to Karen, not to me (in January, the last time we dined here together, we both got one in a gift bag.)
I asked why and they said it was “only for the lady” today … which seems like the most blatant gender discrimination I have ever encountered.
Do I not like cake as much as the next person, male or female?
Wasn’t this my diet “cheat day” planned weeks in advance?
And am I not having four friends over for the Oscars on Sunday where I was planning on serving it lightly toasted with jam?
How I suffer … And so … I guess I will just have to content myself with memories of a perfect few hours of dining pleasure with a dear friend instead. (sigh)
Oh Bouley, Marie Antoinette may not have (historically) said it but … “Let them eat cake,” indeed!
NEWSFLASH: ADDENDUM!
As per our twitter dialogue, David Bouley more than made up for this horrifying debacle:
And … at 4:10 pm I picked up this (photographed outside my namesake bistro):
How nice to know that a great chef is also a gentleman and a man of his word!
