All day I’ve been thinking of the refrain from COMPANY’s THE LITTLE THINGS YOU DO TOGETHER.
[And as an aside, I completely admit to having a Raul Esparza fascination/passion/obsession; in fact, everyone should.]
Why that song?
Well, along with skyping non-stop to India –– Sanjay finished around 3 am his time –– for website adjustments, I’ve been texting and emailing close friends to simply give a five star rating or write a 2 line review for the novel on iTunes.
We’re in the pre-launch phase and having a significant number of likes and reviews is vital to … well, EVERYTHING.
And honestly, it takes literally 30 to 90 seconds.
You open up iTunes.
You search for my last name.
You find the novel, DOWNWARD DOG.
And then you rate and/or review.
[And P.S. PLEASE, if you’re reading this, just shoot me an email and I will send you a FREE copy of the eBook so you can truly read it. I would love that.]
[And P.P.S. –– I will ALWAYS remember you and ALWAYS be appreciative for an endorsement –– my recall of support is encyclopedic and meaningful.]
But seriously –– this costs nothing and takes 90 seconds.
It’s very … little.
I realized last night that my focus was off –– I was focused on the people who hadn’t responded to the request yet, rather than on those who had.
And yes it is true that I had to force Adrian to rank me on itunes while at a wine bar, only because the handsome hipster model-bartender got involved and was like “Dude, it takes under a minute. And while you’re at it, would you also vote for my Mom on Edible Something or Other.” [Which of course I did immediately.]
Probably the delay is because it seems so little and easy, and therefore feels trivial (while in my mind it’s very “Life or Death!” ala Rachel Zoe’s “Everything Is On The Line!”)
But I too easily brushed over both Philip and Daniel emailing me yesterday asking me what they could do to help the cause.
Or the vast enthusiasm I’ve gotten from Adrian for the website revisions (check out the home page slider is you want to be Wowed.)
Or that 9 dear friends have already written reviews and, as of this morning, 17 have ranked the book.
Or that I’ve kept poor Sanjay up until 3 am working on this dutifully –– and perhaps quite ironically as well, since his only request is that I give HIM a five star review at the agency through which I’ve hired him.
Thus, I’m shifting this blog from slightly overwhelmed and complain-y to one of TOTAL APPRECIATION for all those who are rallying to the cause, and supporting the work.
And I LET GO to realize that not everyone defines themselves (as I do) by their cracker jack response to email. Perhaps Sunday is THE day that many loved ones will spring into action.
And ff there’s any way I can give you wonderful people, individually or collectively five stars, I will. [And obviously that means you, Sanjay, first of all.]
For, as Sondheim extolled more than a quarter century ago, it’s the LITTLE things you do together that make PERFECT RELATIONSHIPS.
And while I do love Raul endlessly, I have to say, ultimately it’s all about Elaine Stritch (always).
