Here was my newsletter today –- which has resulted in a ton of wonderful emails:
EXACTLY WHY ARE YOU HERE?
How many times have you gone out to run errands, returning home with bags of groceries, assorted household supplies, and maybe even some impulse purchases … but COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN the one thing you set out to buy?
Rumi writes about this phenomenon, not just from a perspective of tasks, but of how you spend your entire life:
There is one thing in this world that you must never forget to do. If you forget everything else and not this, there’s nothing to worry about; but if you remember everything else and forget this, then you will have done nothing in your life.
RUMI
This year, particularly with my novel being published this July and a gallery show opening next week, and being part of SARK’s first video party — details HERE — I’m trying to practice something I learned from Stephen Covey (the “Seven Habits” guy).
In a lecture to MBA students, he brought in a mason jar and filled it with three rocks.
He asked the class if it was full. Not sure of his point, 50% said yes and 50% said no.
Then he added a slew of pebbles, asking the same questions. More students got that the jar wasn’t quite full.
And then he added gravel as filler. And then he added water. Even so, the students didn’t quite get the point of the lesson.
Was it that you can always do more? That you can keep adding on layers of activities and challenges?
NO. Not at all.
The point Covey was making was that you can only put this much in
if you PUT THE BIG ROCKS IN FIRST.
If you start with the pebbles and the gravel and the water, you can never fit the Big Rocks into the jar. They will be left out. But if you start with the Big Rocks, everything else pretty much works its way around them.
So here’s the question for 2013: What are your Big Rocks?
(Or as Rumi would ask, “Why are you here?”)
What are the things — and you really should haven’t more than three(ish) — that will really sustain and transform your life (and everything else can find space around them)?
As Wayne Dyer says, “Don’t die with your music still inside you!”
