Having watched both MILK (the Oscar-winning movie starring Sean Penn) and THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK (the Oscar-winning documentary) today back-to-back, I’m more than a little verklempt.
Both films are just SO GOOD … particularly when you watch them together and see how astonishing the performances (and casting) are in MILK.
And I’m marveling at Danny Elfman’s score –– it’s so much more than Batman or Beetlejuice. I honestly think he’s at his best in lush orchestral settings that focus on BEAUTY.
[And as an aside, I also had no idea that he was married to the quietly retired Bridget Fonda for the last decade.]
Anyway –– all of this prep work for editing this book by someone who was there at the time –– has been exhausting but unbelievably inspiring.
In the end, as Harvey said:
I know you can’t live on hope alone….but without it life is not worth living.
