Although I’ve long been a complicated yet passionate fan, I’d never heard of The Streisand Effect until yesterday.
Basically, this dude and his company compiled 12,000 photos of the California Coastline for a government sanctioned program about land erosion. Apparently, Barbra flipped out that her Malibu mansion was included (since it was in fact on the coastline) but only 6 people had downloaded the photo (and 2 of those six were her attorneys.)
She tried to sue for its removal AND $50 million dollars, yet the case was thrown out of court.
Not before, however, over 500,000 people viewed or downloaded Image 3850.
That’s like the best example EVER of how focusing on what you DON’T WANT always backfires (500,000 times over in fact.)
